During the conference “Promoting Clean Energy Transition on the Greek Islands“, organized by DAFNI in the framework of the online forum of the Initiative “Clean Energy for European Islands” on Friday October 30th 2020, innovative solutions and best practices developed within SMILE were presented. Project partner Emmanouil Kamilakis from DAFNI presented the innovative smart grid technologies, installed on the SMILE demonstrator islands, to Greek island municipalities highlighting its replicability potential. The three demonstrator islands were described in detail and the applicability of the implemented solutions to the Greek islands was explained.
The event gathered a large number of participants, including many executives from Greek islands local authorities.
We are glad to announce that the Secretary General of Energy and Mineral Resources confirmed the support of the Ministry of Environment and Energy in the efforts to decarbonize the Greek islands while two Greek Members of the European Parliament addressed the catalytic role played by the European Parliament in creating financial tools for the sustainable development of the islands.
Moreover, representatives from the regulator and the network operators discussed the need to upgrade the regulatory framework and grid infrastructure for the integration of innovative clean energy solutions, and sector coupling on the islands and beyond. The need for coordination of all stakeholders at European, national and local level to promote the islands as places of prosperity and innovation, became a common finding and SMILE can play a key role in achieving this goal: stay tuned for more updates!
