The IANOS project kick-off took place on October 7-8. IANOS (IntegrAted SolutioNs for the DecarbOnization and Smartification of Islands) brings together two Lighthouse islands and three Fellow islands, all sharing a common vision of decarbonizing their energy systems and be energy independent until 2050.

34 strongly experienced partners from nine European countries, join forces to deliver smart technological, economic and social innovations, providing systemic optimization starting from an Energy Community centric approach. IANOS will be demonstrated on the islands of Terceira in Italy and Ameland in the Netherlands. Lampedusa (Italy), Bora-Bora (French Polynesia), and Nissyros (Greece) will act as follower islands whom will focus on replicating what the two lighthouse islands have developed and demonstrated. The IANOS project will last for four years and is focussed around three multidisciplinary Island Energy Transition Tracks (IETTs) and on-top of an Energy Community-centric approach. Moreover, IANOS will demonstrate the direct increase of renewable energy mix through targeted interventions at two Lighthouse Islands and within nine different Use Cases. Furthermore, the project will tackle extremely high RES induced, grid integration challenges, foster innovation on storage and Smart Grid technologies to maximize its flexibility potential, and evaluate the replication potential in EU Islands.

The IANOS project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement n°957810.
